Middlesbrough area guide

It is incredible to believe that in 1801 Middlesbrough was a small farm with a population of just 25. It was during the latter half of the 19th century that it experienced rapid growth. Famous for its industrial heritage it continues to undergo major regeneration. Middlesbrough features two famous bridges, namely the Transporter Bridge and the Tees Newport Bridge with the town centre incorporating many buildings of architectural interest including Middlesbrough Town Hall and in the suburb of Acklam the recently refurbished Acklam Hall.

Within Middlehaven stands the Temenos sculpture and Middlesbrough continues to expand in terms of culture and leisure with Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art which opened its door in 2007.

Middlesbrough also has a healthy musical heritage. A number of bands and musicians hail from the area including Chris Rea, Paul Rodgers and Micky Moody.

Middlesbrough features two recreational parks, Albert Park and Stewarts Park and alongside these parks are two culture attractions, namely The Dorman Memorial Museum and the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum.

Middlesbrough is also home to the Premier League Football team, Middlesbrough FC with the club based at the Riverside Stadium on the banks of the River Tees.

Middlesbrough became a University town in 1992 and Teesside University continues to dominate the town centre attracting students from all over the world.
